Fantasy World

Andy Clarke has written an engaging post today entitled, You’re living in a fantasy world.  Mr. Clarke has always been an avid supporter of “moving the web forward”, and I for one am a fan and supporter.

But…

There was something that struck me in Andy’s post, specifically:

If you are one of those people who is waiting until using progressive CSS is safe because all major browsers support the same CSS at the same time, you’re living in a fantasy world.

I humbly object to this statement.

To make a poor car analogy, CSS3 is like the Autobahn where powerful, stunning and elegant vehicles grace the road.  Most folks however, their cars won’t drive on the Autobahn because they’re not powerful enough to handle it.  Surely it would behove me to develop for the masses as opposed to those who are smart enough to modernize their browser.  In other words, I’m not going to build one Autobahn after another when everyone is still driving on surface streets.

Fantasy world is thinking that everyone has the ability and the access, the know how or even the desire to upgrade their browser.
